I was having a conversation last night with some friends, and I figured I would ask Oppo. What movie did you see exactly once, thought it was great, but would never see again? I think Leaving Las Vegas. Super good, Cage and Elisabeth Shue were on, but god DAMN does it make me depressed. So what do you have Oppo?

Requiem for a Dream. Really powerful movie. Never need to see it again.

that was actually the movie a friend picked, and I totally agree

Schindler's List.

Even though TBS and TNT show it every other hour:
The Shawshank Redemption.
Once you know how everything goes down the movie is not as powerful. The first time you see it it's fantastic.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind was one of these, for me. Saw it in the theater. Left stunned. Never want to see it again. I feel like it'd just put me in a real bad headspace.

yup, this. One time only

Saving Private Ryan . I could not go through that again.

see I have watched it numerous times. You are correct it loses something, but still a good watch 2-3 times.

agreed there too

Harold and Maude. I just couldn't stop watching this teenager and granny falling in love. Also, Jag hearse.

Thinking of recent movies that I thought were good but never want to see again:
Locke: too tense, only one actor
Into The Woods: too much singing
Borderline:
Under the Skin: would just fast forward to Scarjo nudie bits
![]() 01/29/2015 at 16:24 |

lol I would watch it over and over for the Jag, but that is what we have the interwebs for

You beat me. I've seen it several times because in high school I was one of a couple people with a copy. Lots of people wanted to see it but didn't want to watch it alone. I've never done drugs. That movie may be why.

American History X

Schindler's List and Downfall are obvious choices but, to me, Drive belongs on that list as well.

I saw it in college. When it was over I called my mom and told her I loved her. I also cried alone in my dorm. Fuck that movie.

The Pacific (not a movie, but close enough)

Maleficent.
It wasn't a bad movie by any means (though, it's borderline inappropriate for small kids). I enjoyed watching it. But the movie has the same re-playability as the campaign of a Call of Duty game. On my second viewing, I was asleep 15 minutes in.
![]() 01/29/2015 at 16:30 |

yeah I was wondering about that. My little girls can make that decision on their own later in ife if they want to see it!
![]() 01/29/2015 at 16:30 |

There are the obvious ones (Schindler's list, Saving Private Ryan, Leaving Las Vegas, etc), then there's that one, for me. Not because it's about the physical destruction, but the mental and emotional. I loved it and I hated what it did to me.
![]() 01/29/2015 at 16:30 |

I had to watch that several times in small portions just to follow the story. Kept messing with my head. But yes, once you've seen it all there's no reason to do it again.

Yeah pretty much anything by Todd Solonz. Or Harmony Korine

Grave of the Fireflies is a great movie, the animation is superb, and story extremely moving......unfortunately it's also one of the most depressing things ever committed to film. Schindler's List is likewise a beautiful story and excellent movie, but also such a downer.
![]() 01/29/2015 at 16:33 |
|
I think The Usual Suspects and Fight Club are both examples of movies you have to see at least twice...because watching it the second time is a completely different experience, and imo not a worse one.
![]() 01/29/2015 at 16:35 |
|
Also, either one of the Great Gatsby films. Everyone knows the endings, so you're just watching the cinematic interpretations of what happens until the end. So once you watch it once, there's no reason to watch again.

I can't. Too much of a punch in the gut. Brilliant film, but one and done for me.

and Leo, in one. I cant even...

Okay, this is something that I just think is ridiculous, because I've heard multiple people say it about Into the Woods and Les Mis: did you not know what the movie was going into it? I mean, if you don't care for musicals, why did you go see a musical?
![]() 01/29/2015 at 16:44 |

Came here to post this. I've never seen it. I asked friends in high school to watch it again w/ me, and no one would ever take me up on it!

Some Terry Gilliam films, I was glad to see them but I never need to go back. Zero Theorem, Dr. Parnassus are like that for me. I could have skipped Tideland altogether.

Honestly, one of my favorite "I have the house to myself" weekend things to do is order a pizza, open a bottle of Jack, and watch "Leaving Las Vegas".
I guess I'm just a twisted fuck.

Meryl Streep was awesome, and I thought the musical arrangements were really cool with all the counter melody. So, verdict: good movie. However 2+ hours of that made for kind of a long movie so I don't want to see it again.
...also I ashamedly did not know that it was a musical when I bought the tix.

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Johnny Depp and Benicio del Tores are phenomenal but that movie is just too messed up to watch more than once.

Drive is most certainly not on that list for me. I've seen it at least a half dozen times.

Doesn't that put it off the list of movies you see once but never again?
![]() 01/29/2015 at 17:47 |
|
Yes. "... certainly not on that list"
I don't have many movies that I really like that I won't rewatch though. I find that there are always things I've missed the first time around or something like that. As a general rule, if I wouldn't watch it again I probably didn't like it at all.

Oldboy, the original version. Can't even recommend it for everyone, as it has some seriously messed up storyline. There was another, the movie itself had one of the most beautifully filmed opening scenes I have ever seen. About a child falling out a window. Willem Dafoe was in it, but I can't remember the title. I don't think I was able to watch the entire movie either.

A bit of an obscure film, but Henry: Portrait of a serial killer. Probably my favorite horror film and one of the most underrated, but the images it displayed on the screen. My god.

Dead Poet's Society. Kurtwood Smith's acting at the end tore me apart. I bought the movie because I loved it so much, but I haven't watched it again.

Coming in a little later after a browse... Traitor, if you have not seen it, is really good. Don Cheadle in that one.
